Somdet Chaophraya Borom Maha Sri Suriyawongse (Chuang Bunnag) was a great Thai statesman who made significant contributions to the nation. He served as a central figure of unity for everyone in Bansomdejchaopraya Rajabhat University and the surrounding community. The institution’s location and the surrounding area were formerly part of his estate and land. Consequently, he is deeply respected by all within the Rajabhat institution, affectionately referred to as “Father” and self-identified as “Luksuriya.” He received the royal emblem of Suriyamonton from King Chulalongkorn, which became his personal emblem and a symbol representing him throughout his life.

Somdet Chaophraya Borom Maha Sri Suriyawongse, also known as Buannakh, was the eldest son of Somdet Chaophraya Borom Maha Pariyurawongse (Dis Bunnag) and Lady Chan. He was born on December 23, 1868, during the reign of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V). He had eight siblings from the same parents. The Buannakh family, prominent in Ayutthaya, held significant governmental positions and continued their legacy through generations.

Somdet Chaophraya Borom Maha Sri Suriyawongse received a thorough education and training in various fields. His father served as Minister of Finance and important foreign affairs and urban administration posts, with extensive experience in coastal governance. He developed a keen interest in the English language, mastering both spoken and written forms. He engaged closely with Westerners in Thailand during his time, particularly with diplomats. He played a pivotal role in negotiating and entering agreements with Western nations during the reigns of King Rama III and King Rama IV. Additionally, he possessed shipbuilding skills, contributing to the construction of large paddle steamers. His intellectual pursuits extended to literature, commerce, and governance.

Somdet Chaophraya Borom Maha Sri Suriyawongse, also known as Buannakh, dedicated himself wholeheartedly to the service of the nation during the reigns of King Rama II to King Rama V. He held esteemed positions throughout his life, notably serving as the Minister of Finance and important administrative roles. His leadership and wisdom were widely recognized, earning him the title of Akhom Maha Sena Bodhi, the highest administrative position, during King Rama IV’s reign.

Even after retiring from formal governmental duties, he continued to serve as a trusted advisor until his passing. He was revered as a key figure in Thai history, known for his integrity, wisdom, and dedication to the country’s welfare. Sir John Bowring, the British envoy to Thailand during King Rama IV’s reign, praised him as follows: “Somdet Chaophraya Sri Suriyawongse, whether as a statesman or as a patriot, must be acknowledged as surpassing any individual we have met here. He possesses the virtues of a good man and speaks in a manner befitting.”

King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) also held him in high regard, honoring his contributions and ethical conduct. His legacy continues to serve as an exemplary model for future generations, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to the greater good and fearless determination in decision-making.

Somdet Chaophraya Borom Maha Sri Suriyawongse was married to Khlin, and together they had four children. In his later years, he often resided in Ratchaburi and passed away from cholera aboard a ship at Klong Krathum Ban in Ratchaburi at the age of 74 on January 19, 1883. Every year on January 19, Ratchaburi Rajabhat University commemorates him with a ceremony known as “Pirunalai Day,” honoring his legacy. Somdet Chaophraya Borom Maha Sri Suriyawongse remains a unifying figure at the institution, inspiring everyone to uphold his virtues and maintain unity in perpetuity.

 

 

**In the 150th anniversary of Somdet Chaophraya Borom Maha Sri Suriyawongse’s incumbency as a statesman 2018, Ratchaburi Rajabhat University nominated Somdet Chaophraya Borom Maha Sri Suriyawongse (Chuang Bunnag) according to criteria for nominating significant individuals and historical events through the Ministry of Education to propose to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to honor him as a significant global figure for education, science, and culture in perpetuity.
